Add Social Icons in Thesis Sidebar

Posted by Mayank on July 3, 2011 in Website

Social icons can help you increase the traffic to your website and also increase the popularity. Placement of social icons is very critical. Since only a small percentage of people share or like or vote for a particular post or website, so the webmasters will do good by making the experience of sharing or like or vote simple and easy.

One of the known good options is to place the social icons in your sidebar in the upper most fold. As you can see in this website (also shown in the picture below). This site uses Thesis theme.

There are several options out there if you search for this solution in Google, but all of them are complex changes and need you to make changes in your custom_functions.php and custom.css files. If you need a simple solution, which you can implement in seconds, without having to spend a lot of time understanding, this approach is for you. Please follow the below steps to add social icons in Thesis sidebar :

  1. Go to the Resources Section to get FREE Social Icons.
  2. Select, unzip and upload the social media icons you’d like to have. You can upload them using FileZilla or any other FTP utility or you can upload them via Dashboard -> Media -> Add New.
  3. Take a note of the path where the file is saved. Also, the download pack contains images in different sizes and you may need to scale them appropriately as per your need.
  4. Add a Text Widget to the Right Side Bar and add the below code :

<p>

<a rel="nofollow" href="YOUR-TWITTER-URL"> <img src="YOUR-IMAGE-URL" border="0" alt="" /></a>
<a rel="nofollow" href="YOUR-FACEBOOK-PAGE-URL"><img src="YOUR-IMAGE-URL" border="0" alt="" /></a>
<a rel="nofollow" href="YOUR-FEED-URL"><img src="YOUR-IMAGE-URL" border="0" alt="" /></a>

</p>

Let me know if you have any doubts.
