FaceTime Failed – xxx is not available for FaceTime

Posted by Diya on November 27, 2010 in Apple

This thanksgiving, I bought a new iPod Touch 8GB and thought of testing it out before gifting it to my elder sister. Everything worked smooth as expected until I tried to test out Facetime. I created a new Apple account for my sister (she did not own a single Apple product till date and hence, did not have an Apple account yet). I updated the contacts in my iPhone 4 to add the my sister’s new Apple id and then I added myself as first contact (my existing Apple id) in the iPod Touch. I could successfully made Facetime calls from iPhone 4 to iPod using Facetime using my wireless network.

However, whenever I tried to make call from iPod to iPhone 4, I would get a message like :

“FaceTime Failed – xxx is not available for FaceTime”

** xxx is the name I was making call to.

I struggled hard to fix my iPhone as I thought that there is something wrong with the iPhone 4. I checked and verified that everything is in place to make Facetime calls work and anyway I was able to make outgoing calls from iPhone 4 to iPod. I searched for solutions in Apple Support, but without much success in finding a solution, which pertained to my situation. However, I did find a solution, which worked and is quite simple :

  • Go to Settings -> Phone and turn Facetime to OFF. Turn if back ON again.
  • Go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset all Settings
  • Restart the iPod or iPhone.

I had to reconnect to the wireless because I had reset all settings. Facetime started to work seamless immediately after, both from iPod to iPhone and iPhone to iPod.

Did a random google search. THANK YOU.
I didn’t know the facetime option was under “phone” in the settings menu.
