Less than 6 weeks after Firefox 6 was released, Firefox 7 has been launched. Mozilla boasts that Firefox 7 uses less memory and performs faster. Firefox 7 also improved its support for cutting-edge web technologies, including hardware-accelerated Canvas for HTML5 animations. That means that web apps and browser-based games should get better performance.

Firefox 7 is supposed to consume less memory than previous versions — in the range of 20% to 30% less. Firefox 7 team claims that the memory consumption can even go down to 50% less in some caes. This means that Firefox and the websites you use will be snappier, more responsive, and suffer fewer pauses. It also means that Firefox is less likely to crash or abort due to running out of memory.

These benefits are most noticeable if you do any of the following:

  • Keep Firefox open for a long time.
  • Have many tabs open at once, particularly tabs with many images.
  • View web pages with large amounts of text.
  • Use Firefox on Windows
  • Use Firefox at the same time as other programs that use lots of memory.
