I wanted to download one of the classic books “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” for my son and I went to the iBookstore so that I can download it to my iPhone and iPad. However, to my surprise, I found that the book is listed as low as $0.99 and as high as $5.99 . The reason for unhappiness was in my awareness of Project Gutenberg.

Project Gutenberg is a wonderful resource for older books whose copyright have expired in the U.S. Currently Project Gutenberg has more than 33,000 titles, which you can download to read on your PC, iPad, Kindle, Sony Reader, iPhone, Android or other portable device.

In case you’re a iPhone or iPad user, it’s quite easy to download free books for iBooks directly from Project Gutenberg. Follow the below steps :

  1. Launch Safari browser and go to Project Gutenber website.
  2. Search the book you want to download, click on its link and choose to download the ePub version of the same.

3. Chose the option Open in iBooks. The book will be downloaded in iBooks.

Given this option and the fact that iOS devices running the current iOS software can now save and load books in the ePub forma, you might want to check other sites that offer free ePub books like MobileRead, epubBooks, and Feedbooks.
