Today Google launched offline versions of GMail, Calendar and Docs in an effort to increase the offline productivity. GMail offline was already available (details here : how to enable offline GMail). Today the company announced that it was adding offline capabilities immediately to GMail, and offline features for Calendar and Docs will be rolling out over the next week, starting today. Does it sound confusing ? Yes, it is! The catch is, you might have to switch browsers or wait even longer.

The change was announced by Benoît de Boursetty, product manager for Google Apps in the GMail blog. Though there is still an option to enable offline GMail from your regular GMail. The launch today for Gmail Offline is a Chrome Web Store app that’s intended for situations when you need to read, respond to, organize and archive email without an internet connection like when traveling in planes, trains etc.

This HTML5-powered app is based on the GMail web app for tablets, which was built to function with or without web access. After you install the Gmail Offline app from the Chrome Web Store, you can continue using Gmail when you lose your connection by clicking the Gmail Offline icon on Chrome’s “new tab” page.

In addition to the Gmail Offline app, Google is also rolling out the ability to access Calendar and Docs offline. To enable offline Google Calendar and Offline Google Docs, click the gear icon at the right top corner f the page and select option for offline access. Offline mode lets you view events and RSVP to appointments in Calendar and view documents in Docs. Offline editing isn’t available yet, but Google promises that it is working on it and it will be available soon.

The apps are only available through the Chrome Web Store at the moment and will come to other  browsers later on. If you try to use the Calendar or Docs offline features, you will be prompted to first install Chrome, if you don’t have it already.
