I was a PC user earlier and converted to Mac about 2 years back. Being a Windows user, I had accumulated a lot of rar files. A rar file is quite similar to a zip file, which is an archive file format that supports data compression. After migrating to Mac, I was surprised to realize that the rar files do not open in Mac and there isn’t a Mac version of Winrar. However, it did not take me long to find a solution and if you also wondered how to open rar files on Mac – this post is for you!
Here are 3 options I’ve used to open RAR files on Mac based on my order of preference. Again, all these are free utilities and you don’t have to pay a dime to open rar files on Mac.
Option # 1 : How to Open RAR Files on Mac
After using several utilities, I’ve found myself to be highly satisfied by a FREE utility, which is available in Mac app store. This utility is called The Unarchiver. The Unarchiver is a small and easy program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR, 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It can open many other formats like Stuffit, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It does not stop there, it can open other kinds of files like ISO and BIN disk images, some Windows .EXE installers. Actual list is much longer and is available at the homepage of the product as well.
The Unarchiver also tries to detect and correctly handle the filename encoding in the archives it opens, allowing you to open files from every part of the world without getting garbled file names.
The Unarchiver aims to be the only unarchiving program you’ll ever need. Click Here for the FREE version of The Unarchiver.
Option # 2 : How to Open RAR Files on Mac
UnRarX is the utility you can utilize to open rar files on Mac. UnRarX is a Mac OS X Cocoa application that allows you to expand rar archives and restore corrupted or missing archives using par2. Click Here to go to get UnRarX for FREE. When you download UnRarX, it is in zip format, which is already supported you your Mac. Unzip the downloaded version and you can move the extracted version to Applications folder.
You’ll be asked if you want to allow UnRarX to automatically check for updates when it starts every time. You can select No as such applications do not have a new update every time you open the application. Again, you’ll be asked if you’d like to make a donation. You can say Yes or No as per your wish. These messages won’t appear again. Next you need to chose the destination of the unrar files. I usually keep it the same as the original rar file.
Now you’re all set to open .rar files on a Mac. Select any rar file you’d like to open and it will extract the file in the same folder or as per the destination chosen by you.
Option # 3 : How to Open RAR Files on Mac
You can make use of another free tool named “RAR Expander” to open .rar files on Mac. RAR Expander is a Mac OS X program, which extracts the files contained in RAR archives. It not only supports both single and multi-part archives, but also supports password-protected archives as well. It uses the official unRAR library internally so it is fully compatible with archives produced by WinRAR. RAR Expander also features AppleScript support, and includes a few useful example scripts for expanding multiple archives at once.
