iOS 5 launched a new feature named iMessage. iMessage is Apple’s new messaging service, which lets you send messages to other iOS 5 users at aboslutely no cost. Another reason to upgrade to iOS 5! iMessage is similar to Facetime and lets you use your email address instead of your phone number. Despite the easy iMessage setup, you can end up sending a SMS instead of iMessage and end up paying money to your cellular company for the SMS usage.

Let’s understand what you need to do to ensure you’re doing iMessage and not SMS.

Sending iMessage is same as sending SMS. There is only a subtle difference in color and category.

When you open your Messages app and add the name of the person you intend to send the message to, you will notice that the Send button is blue if you’re sending an iMessage, or green if you’re sending a standard SMS/MMS message. The placeholder text will also dictate “iMessage” or “Text Message”.

iMessage blue

SMS Green

Not sure how, but your iPhone is smart enough to find out if the recipient is also on iOS 5 or not. If on iOS 5, it sends an iMessage and if on a lower version of iOS, it sends a SMS. Since it works on all iOS 5 devices, you can use it to send free message across iPad, iPod and iPhones.

iMessage is free when using over Wi-Fi. When using it in 3G, normal cellular rates apply. ince iMessage is built into the Messages app, you can send photos, videos, locations, and contacts, too. Messages are securely encrypted. And if you have more than one iOS device, iMessage keeps the conversation going across all of them – you can begin a conversation on one device and pick it up on another.

You can text one-on-one or send one for all. Group messages let you keep multiple friends in the loop.

Setup of iMessage is also easy. Go to Settings -> Messages and ensure that iMessage is in ON position.
