Kindle Paperwhite 3G Review

Posted by Mayank on September 7, 2012 in Kindle

As you can read in my earlier post on Kindle Fire Review, I was not really into reading books. Amazon kindled my passion for reading books and made me a regular reader (not exactly an addict or a bookworm). Amazon announced a new lighted E Ink reader today, which will be known as Kindle Paperwhite. After almost the entire year of not-so-exciting product launches — KindlePaperwhite for sure is the one, which I want to buy next and I fear I may become a bookworm soon!

Lighted E Ink readers have been available for some time, like Barnes & Noble’s Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight. The front-lit technology unveiled today is proprietary the difference is pretty immediately clear: it’s all about distribution of light through out the device. Nook has top as the light source, with a stronger concentration and somewhat even distribution. The Kindle’s light however, is hard to spot, thanks in part to a much thinner bezel: you can’t just angle the reader and see the lights here.

Here’s our review of Kindle Paperwhite 3G to help you understand if it is the right product for you.

Kindle Paperwhite 3G Review

Rating: ★★★★½

Availability: Kindle Paperwhite 3G is available in two variants

You can pre-order Kindle Paperwhite now to reach you by Oct 1st, 2012.

Amazon is calling it the Paperwhite because the display now has 62% more pixels, and renders exceptionally sharp, clear text and images. It has 25% better contrast for sharp, dark text. Even in bright sunlight, Paperwhite delivers clear, crisp text and images with no glare. Amazon also went wild with new hand-tuned fonts – 6 font styles and 8 adjustable sizes!

Hold the old and the new Kindle together and the difference is obvious. Here’s an picture to show the difference between the old and the new Kindle in terms of contrast and pixels. The Kindle Paperwhite feels like you’re reading a freshly minted book!

compare old and new kindle

Kindle Paperwhite has a matte screen that reflects light like ordinary paper so you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room with no glare. At the same time, reading in bed also got much better. The patented built-in light illuminates the screen, not the entire room, so you won’t disturb your partner when you can’t put your book down at night.

Paperwhite guides light towards the display from above instead of projecting it out at your eyes like back-lit displays, thereby reducing screen fatigue. You can adjust your screen’s brightness to create a perfect reading experience in all lighting conditions, from bright sunlight to bedtime reading. Amazingly all this comes at an uncompromised battery life! A single charge still lasts up to 8 weeks (based on 30 mins reading per day with wireless off and light setting at 10).

Amazon recommends leaving the light on at all times rather than having to turning it on and off a lot like with the Nook. Adjusting the light is also quite nice, with a dimmer switch that runs up and down and a whole lot of brightness levels.

Kindle Paperwhite just lovely and glamorous. Physical buttons are all gone and the reader is a bit shorter and thinner than its predecessor. Kindle logo sits in the place, which used to be for the menu button. The silver of the last version has been dropped for a matte black, which is really just nicer to look at, with a rubberized back that makes it harder for it to slip from your hands.

Kindle Paperwhite Review Verdict

We still believe that 3G is not really needed as you can load your Kindle when going on a long trip. Also, now-a-days, it is not at all difficult to find a wireless hot spot. Kindle Paperwhite 3G is a product everyone should own! Rated 4.5 stars. We’re giving it 4.5 and not 5 because we still believe that Kindle Paperwhite is a better value than Kindle Paperwhite 3G.

Just ordered the Paperwhite last night. My Kindle Keyboard bricked in late July. Good thing I hesitated for a bit decided what to do. I was looking at a Touch since I am going through major withdrawal! Now I only have to wait four more weeks before I can start devouring books again. I love Kindle!!!!!!!!!

What are the advantages to buying the more expensive NO Ad Supported version?

3 Apurva Tripathi September 11, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Anton,
When you buy the expensive but NO Ad Supported version, you will not see special offers and hence, lesser the temptation and chances of further buying. Over a longer term, No Ad Supported version will work out to be cheaper!
