Mitsubishi WD-92840 Review

Posted by Mayank on July 14, 2012 in Review,Televisions

I’ve never owned a DLP TV – I own LED and Plasma TVs. A friend of mine invited me to his home during dinner and also to showcase his brand new DLP TV. The TV was Mitsubishi WD-92840. The TV was huge. I mean HUGE. Mitsubishi WD-92840, as the name suggests is a 92″ TV and you have to see it to believe how big a TV it is. It really is! Since I never had a DLP TV, so I visited my buddy’s home again and again to know more about it and here’s my review of Mitsubishi WD-92840.

Mitsubishi WD-92840 Review

First about DLP:DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. DLP is a trademark owned by Texas Instruments, representing a technology used in some TVs and video projectors. DLP is used in DLP front projectors (small standalone projection units) and DLP rear projection television sets. It is also one of the leading technologies used in digital cinema projection.

DLP competes against LCD and plasma flat panel displays in the HDTV market.

Let us start with the obvious, this TV is absolutely massive. People displayed on the TV are literally life sized and in some cases larger. So, obviously, you need to have a big enough house and room to accommodate such a huge TV.

Have a look at the 2 images below to see how 46″ and 92″ TVs compare. When you go to retail store to select a TV – a 46″ TV looks big because it is surrounded by TVs of several shapes and sizes. When you bring it home, it doesn’t look as big. If you want a big TV, this might be the one you need (92″). A 92″ TV is so big that four 46″ TVs can fit in a 92″ TV.

The 92″ Mitsubishi WD-92480 uses Immersive Sound Technology (IST). It has 16 speakers, which produce a 5.1 surround sound and deliver a world-class video imagery with fully immersive, built-in surround sound audio-easily and instantly-right out of the box. It is really awesome.

The colors on this TV are great, though they may need some adjusting when you get the TV. This is because the brightness might feel a little different level if you’re not used to TVs as big as a this. TVs of such size are usually dimmer than its 55″ brethren from a simple standpoint of power. It takes a lot of power to light up a screen that big. Mitsubishi WD-92840 meets Energy Star compliance, which is great by the way to save you some grid energy. The point of a DLP TV is to replicate a movie theater experience. Do you remember any movie theater brightly light from inside?

The Contrast on the TV is very good. WD-92840 certainly has better blacks than most LCD/LED TV’s on the market and is fairly on par with most high quality Plasmas.

Viewing angles is something which DLP TVs can not handle very well as of now and this one is no exception. If you stand up while watching the TV you are going to notice a significant change in brightness. The same applies to walking to the sides. However, it is not the worst thing in the world because when you’re watching TV or a movie, you’re watching a TV. You’re not doing aerobics that you change your position every second.

The next big gripe about this TV is the reflectivity of the screen. It is not very reflective, but fairly reflective. To give you a good comparison that you can view in case you can’t find this TV in a store, the display is about 30% LESS reflective than a standard glossy laptop screen. So, again not that bad! Remember, you need to set your room as a movie theatre and not a regular viewing room!

WD-92480 is compatible with any Bluetooth® enabled media player or phone, this feature allows you to stream music from your player directly to your TV without wires or additional accessories. Try your iPhone, iPad – it just works seamless.

4 HDMI inputs allow you to connect all your digital components with the highest video quality and interface with your CEC compatible devices. Also, connect your PC or laptop using a DVI-to-HDMI adapter or cable to use your HDTV as a computer monitor.

Conclusion

Most who buy this large screen (DLP), Mitsubishi WD-92840 cannot fathom that they bought a movie theater. So let go!, that square box you use to look at, and the rectangle high gloss color (LED, LCD, & Plasma) you have in your bedroom. This is not a TV it’s a movie theater!

Another item that most people forget is watching it in the daytime. Again, you don’t watch movies with the sun shining, or the room lights lit. So as with any movie theater, this rear projector will more than fill your box office.

WD-92840 is ideal for fast moving action, sports, movies and games, giving you a crisp, blur free image.

Mitsubishi WD-92840 is not a TV, it’s a movie theater!!!

Rating: ★★★★½
